School History

Image of Condit Elementary

Mrs. Van Loo opened a one-room schoolhouse in 1911 and eventually a 4-room school was constructed in 1914 on Laurel Street. Mr. Seals became the first “official” principal in 1917 and was succeeded by Mr. O.W. Wilcox in 1920 as enrollment continued to steadily grow. In 1927 an addition to the original building was constructed, our school became a part of Houston Independent School district, and the name officially became Al J. Condit Elementary to honor a prominent Bellaire citizen and the man who provided the land for our campus. Infact, the 1927additionremained a part of the building until the 2016 new construction. Ellen Sterns served an astounding 31 years as our school’s principal and was followed by Helen Huettel, Martha Watson, Aldean Harper, Doris Pasquali, Carol Kanewske, Fred Bowyer, and I have the good fortune serving as the 12th principal of Condit since 2013.
